NUNO—which simply means “cloth” in Japanese—is headed by world-renowned textile designer Reiko Sudo who launched the company more than 35 years ago with textile icon Jun’ichi Arai. NUNO seamlessly networks the independent spinners, dyers and mills that still survive in villages throughout Japan with a highly-developed communications infrastructure. Combining traditional weaving technologies, with state-of-the-art materials and manufacturing technologies, the special production processes behind each and every one of NUNO’s unique designs rely heavily on the expertise of Japan’s highly-skilled crafts persons and their centuries of accumulated experience.
Because NUNO is a design studio, rather than a conventional textile manufacturer, the product line is constantly evolving, with earlier fabrics continually being updated with new ones. In addition to the collection of favorites shown on the Textiles page of this site that are always in stock, NUNO has a library of thousands of fabrics in Japan that can be accessed for specific applications. And because manufacturing is done in small lots, it is often possible to modify an existing design, or even create an entirely new custom design for an individual project. In fact, the textiles shown here can be considered a kind of "jumping-off point" from which architects and interior designers can collaborate with NUNO's designers to seamlessly integrate textiles into their work.
