coal

Polyester monofilament—commonly used as fishing line—has a hard, stiff structure that is usually considered a defect in cloth. NUNO’s Coal is finished with an alkaline reducing process which softens the surface of the fabric. This process characteristically allows the material to bend and crumple naturally, and creates a smooth, lacquer-like surface. This new version is treated with a waterproof coating to lock the threads in place, eliminating the need for backing when this tough textile is used as upholstery.

This process, for which NUNO now holds a patent, is all done by hand.
